Research on reservoir sedimentation in recent years has been aimed mainly at water resources projects in developing countries. These countries, especially in Africa, often have to cope with long droughts, flash floods and severe erosion problems. Large reservoir capacities are required to capture water provided by flash floods so as to ensure the supply of water in periods of drought. The problem arising however is that these floods, due to their tremendous stream power, carry enormous volumes of sediment which, due to the size of reservoirs, are virtually deposited in toto in the reservoir

In order to succeed, human factors research must blend the subjective and objective aspects of the client's situation, applying both argument and evidence. How to accomplish this complex and very necessary goal is the subject of this book in which information systems, research methods, and evaluation procedures have been formulated as elements in an application strategy that makes possible the blending of research and design. Three main themes are maintained throughout the book: the concern to ensure that designers know how to conduct human factors research in an effective and efficient mann

Provides answers to important questions concerning the sampling, isolation, and analysis methods used to determine the chemicals of health concern that are in drinking waters, waste waters, and natural waters. Discusses analytical protocols for concentrating organic compounds for toxicity testing, reverse osmosis to isolate organic pollutants from water, and synthetic polymers for concentrating organic chemicals from water. Offers novel methods to isolate and fractionate organic chemicals in water samples, isolation methods to collect large amounts of organic chemicals from water, biological testing of waterborne organic compounds, and the toxicological testing-analysis interface. A valuable reference for researchers involved in environmental toxic contamination analysis and identification, as well as research biologists, pharmaceutical chemists, environmentalists, toxicologists, and pharmacologists.
